In Belgium for every 100 patients on dialysis, only 9 are cared for at home, while there are 25 in Sweden or 21 in the Netherlands.
In this report we propose a whole series of general recommendations to unblock the situation and leave the patient the possibility of being dialyzed at home if he wishes…
- Redesign the pre-dialysis process in order to facilitate informed and partnered decisions form the patients.
- Improve hospital positioning on home dialysis by extending their extramural dialysis activities, with or without external partners.
- To promote patients’ associations to have more active role in the advocacy for home-based dialysis.
- Increase focus on the knowledge development of the caregivers.
But nothing will be done without changing the mode of financing…. the proposed new global reimbursement system for Belgium could be designed as a “cappuccino model” composed of three layers to discover in the report.
